The Jazz Cocktail “Hour”

About the Jazz Cocktail “Hour”

Great jazz for everyone! The evening begins with drinks or a signature cocktail, and small bites. Concerts are held on the second floor, The Univest Room, of  the Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center. This intimate room allows the audience to experience the creative, improvisational form of jazz, up close and personal. Sara Michaels, jazz and blues vocalist and local resident, gives a brief introduction to connect the artist with the audience.

2018/2019 Jazz sponsored in memory of William E. “Bill” Donoghue 1941-2017.

Jazz Cocktail Hour

Mike Boone Quartet with Jazz prodigy, Mekhi Boone

Thursday, March 21, 2019 6:30pm

Bassist Mike Boone’s jazz story began when he was just eight years old. After attending the finest schools of music, touring with legendary performers like Buddy Rich and Ben Vereen, and recording with many more, he settled into the Philadelphia jazz scene. Here, he plays with luminaries such as saxophonist Tony Williams, pianist Trudy Pitts, WCU’s John Swana as well as pride and joy, jazz prodigy and son, drummer Mekhi Boone. He teaches at Temple University and frequently tours with Ben Vereen and Jazz Organist, Joey DeFrancesco.

Mekhi “Kaboom” Boone, Mike Boone’s youngest son, plays six instruments (piano, drums, trumpet, electric bass, upright bass and electric guitar), though his parents knew early on that his favorite would be drums. Gifted with perfect pitch, he has never had a lesson and plays by ear, mentored by Lil John Roberts, drummer to Janet Jackson and Stevie Wonder. Now 12, he’s been playing professionally since age 7 on Philly and NYC stages, a fixture at Chris’ Jazz Cafe. When asked what he wants to be when he grows up, Mekhi replies “I’m ALREADY what I want to be!”
