Uptown! Earns Fourth Preservation Award

We are so proud of all the work done to create Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center, from it’s humble beginnings as the Armory to a fully functioning theater for West Chester and surrounding communities.

Congratulations to everyone involved in making this vision a reality!

The Uptown Bravo Theatre, LLC (UBT) and the Uptown! Entertainment Alliance (UEA) have earned a Grand Jury Award from the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia for converting the former West Chester National Guard Armory into Uptown! Knauer Performing Arts Center.  This award recognizes the highest level of achievement in historic preservation for historic building restoration, rehabilitation, or adaptive re-use.  Winners are selected by a jury of preservation professionals. The Awards ceremony will be held in Philadelphia on Wednesday, June 5th.  Also to be recognized will be architect Chuck Ryan of Homsey Architects and construction manager Bancroft Construction Company, both of Wilmington, DE.

This Grand Jury Award is the fourth award for the Armory rehabilitation project.  Previous awards for UBT/UEA are:

  • The West Chester Downtown Foundation’s “Bricks and Mortar” historic preservation award (2017).
  • Preservation Pennsylvania’s “Public Impact” award (2017).  In addition,
  • Bancroft Construction Company won a 2018 Excellence in Construction Award from the American Building Council of Eastern PA for the project.
